Brazil Silvio Leite PCA Lot 11

Silvio Leite is widely regarded as one of the world’s best cuppers and a global leader in specialty coffee. As #11 in Leite’s first auction, Rumble - along with other top Melbourne roasters - won the lot. Now, it’s yours to taste!

WHAT MAKES THIS COFFEE UNIQUE

This 120kg nano-lot was specially prepared for Silvio’s Private Collection Auction (PCA), “Silvio’s Secret Treasures.” We’re super excited to offer this coffee - a true specialty coffee with amazing characteristics.

At Cerca de Pedra São Benedito, processing starts on the field. The team closely monitors the Brix degree of coffee cherries, as this gives the team a great indication of when the cherries have hit peak maturation – the perfect time for picking. 

Here, the cherries were carefully harvested by hand, mostly by local women (called “panhadeiras de cafe”) who are extremely disciplined and ensure only the very best cherries are selected.

After pulping, the fresh mucilage was anaerobically fermented in tanks, with water covering the coffee for 12 hours. The parchment was then transferred to raised African beds and dried slowly for 15 days, then finished in a greenhouse for a further 5 days. During this time, it was regularly turned to ensure even drying.

THE PRODUCER: SILVIO LEITE

The farmer of this coffee, Silvio Leite has played a pivotal role in shaping specialty coffee both in Brazil, and around the world. Silvio purchased his 30-hectare farm, Cerca de Pedra São Benedito, in 2019 and started producing coffee here the following year. Currently, 6 hectares are planted with coffee, including some Gesha, SL-28 and Pacamara varieties that Silvio is trialling on the land. This particular nano-lot is a 50/50 mix of Red and Yellow Catuaí.

The establishment of Cerca de Pedra São Benedito represents a long-held goal for Silvio: “This farm comes as a fulfilment of a dream. Having been in the coffee business for over 40 years, the dream of producing my own coffee comes true now with Fazenda Cerca de Pedra Sao Benedito, and my first harvest.”

PRICING EXPLAINED

 *This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond. 

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
