Bolivia El Fuerte Batian

Bolivia El Fuerte Batian

This remarkable Bolivia El Fuerte Batian coffee is an absolute delight. Intense, velvety and smooth with notes of cherry, nougat, and apple.

This 100% Batian, 120kg micro-lot comes from El Fuerte, one of four farms owned and operated by the amazing Rodríguez family in Bolivia’s Samaipata region.Bolivia El Fuerte Batian Filter coffee

ABOUT THE FARM

El Fuerte is 19.4 hectares in size and sits at 1,526 metres above sea level. The farm itself lies 20km east of the town of Samaipata on the southern edge of the Amboro National Park, which is characterised by great diversity and biological richness, with plentiful forests, waterfalls and exotic birds.

This beautiful natural environment also protects El Fuerte from strong winds and high temperatures. What’s more, the waterways in the valley help regulate the lower temperatures and keep frost away from the coffee crops.

Today, the farm is managed by Ángel Aguilera, a producer who lives on the farm with his wife and family. Although it mostly produces Caturra variety crops, Ángel and Pedro have trialled several varieties on this farm, including Gesha, Pacamara, Batian and Bourbon. This particular lot is 100% Batian.

BATIAN COFFEE VARIETAL

Named after the highest peak on Mt. Kenya, the Batian variety was bred by Kenya’s Coffee Institute and released in 2010. Since then, it has successfully been propagated throughout Kenya, with Latin American growers beginning to experiment with it in recent years. This is due to the fact that the variety is very adaptable, as it is suited to most climates and can start producing coffee in its second year (while more traditional varieties need three years before production is viable). The tree has high levels of resistance to rust and disease, and produces exceptional cup quality - much like its relatives, the very flavourful SL-28 and SL-34 varieties grown in Kenya.

PRICING EXPLAINED

*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
