Delicate floral notes with stonefruit and tropical passionfruit sweetness. An exceptional example of the rare Java varietal.

This 100% Java microlot was produced by Carmela Aduviri in Copacabana, a small and remote settlement 180 kilometres from La Paz in the heart of the Caranavi province.

Carmela has only recently begun producing Java — a rare variety with a long history of cultivation. Its name comes from the Indonesian island of the same name, where coffee was first introduced by the Dutch, directly from Ethiopia, in the early 19th century. It now thrives as an interesting alternative to the Gesha variety. Thanks to its incredibly distinct flavour profile, excellent cup quality, and high tolerance to disease, Java can be quite profitable to small coffee farmers.

Carmela moved to the region when she was 25, and has spent almost 50 years working in coffee - all while raising eight children. Her farm, Carmalita, is around three hectares in size and sits at 1500–1670 MASL. Because the region is so steep, the farm is laid out across five ‘floors’ and contains a number of corridors to make the picking and loading of the cherries easier. Carmela’s house sits on one of the only flat surfaces of the farm, a place that’s also home to a number of mandarin and lime trees which the family grows for food.

Chaffy but tasty

Great coffee. Looks darker on the outside than it actually is, which was a bit strange at first. Also has a significant amount of chaff that I blow away before brewing. Quite a long drawdown too, so I had to grind a bit coarser than I otherwise would, but the end result was smooth and delicious.

Java goodness

The Bolivian Java was very floral with a good mouthfeel as a filter, as a long espresso I got peach notes with dried apricots very pleasurable
