Rwanda Nkara

We are thrilled to introduce our newest single origin coffee, Rwanda Nkara for filter! Sourced from the rolling hills of the Gakende district in Rwanda, this specialty coffee is a testament to the incredible quality and flavours that Rwandan coffee has to offer.

THE NKARA REGION

The Rwanda Nkara single origin coffee comes from the Nkara Washing Station, the smallest of three washing stations owned by the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, a place known for its meticulous processing methods that contribute to the exceptional quality of the beans. Managed by the dedicated and experienced Michel Dusengimana, the Nkara Washing Station was established in 2005 and supports 589 growers total – 192 of whom are women who own small farms in the surrounding villages. The washing station sits at an elevation of 1856 MASL.

The area surrounding Nkara has mineral-rich soil and a lush environment that is well-suited to specialty coffee production. Typically, farms are very small – averaging just a quarter of a hectare – and are situated between 1800 to 2100 metres above sea level. Coffee is grown as a cash crop alongside subsistence food crops like maize, beans and sorghum and some livestock like goats, chickens and cows.

HOW WE ROASTED IT

Due to the inherent flavours of Rwanda Nkara being so suited to filter coffee, we chose to roast the Rwanda Nkara beans to bring out the best characteristics for filter brewing methods. The coffee's vibrant acidity and delicate body make it an excellent choice for pour-over, aeropress, and batch brew techniques. You can expect delicate peach notes with a balanced candy sweetness and tea-like structure.

When brewing this filter coffee, you'll notice the remarkable flavours that set it apart from other coffees.

PRICING EXPLAINED

 *This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond. 

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
