PRICING EXPLAINED
*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.
^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
ABOUT
Grown near East Africa's largest inland lake, Lake Kivi and around the Nyungwe Forest, cherries ripen slower here due to the cool climate. Still, the producers of this beautifully rich coffee believe it's not just the climate but the forest's bee population that contributes to the coffee’s outstanding quality.
Tropic Coffee, the group who organises and exports this particular Rwandan coffee, has been educating the farmers to help preserve the biodiversity of the region, making sure the bee population stays healthy and provides good pollination. They report that these initiatives have improved bean size and flavour and also increased yield by 35-60% - huge!
The horrific Rwandan genocide of 1994 was a life-altering moment for all Rwandans. Coffee continues to be a source of income, stability and longevity for families whose futures have, in other times, been far less than certain. At Rumble, we pay tribute to and acknowledge those families affected and are dedicated to doing all we can to supporting them in the production of their coffee.
