Kenya Kii

Kenya Kii

Rumble's latest single origin for filter, the fruity Kenya Kii Washed Filter coffee. You can expect a sweet and fruity brew, bursting with red currant and citrus. Embellished by gorgeous floral notes.

KII FACTORY

Framed by the snow-capped Mt Kenya, the Kii factory was established in 1997 under the Rung'eto cooperative society and comprises several washing stations. Around 850 smallholder farmers handpick cherries and deliver them here for same-day processing. The result? So special.

The flowering period in this beautiful area is between February and April, with the harvest becoming ready between October and January.

What’s incredible about Kii is that these farmers personally sort their cherries to ensure only the ripest ones are selected, discarding all unripe and overripe cherries.

This particular lot is carefully fermented for 16-24 hours, shielded from direct sunlight, and then undergoes another density-based grading in washing channels. The cherries are immersed in water from the Gatomboya stream for 16-18 hours and taken to drying tables where they rest for 8-14 days, depending on the weather conditions at the time.

The factory actively recycles the water used during the processing and pulping stages, emphasising its commitment to sustainability. Moreover, farmers are encouraged to convert their coffee pulp into natural fertilisers, fostering environment, stewardship and future crop growth.

The majority of families who contributed to this lot farm organically on tiny plots of land averaging just 1-2 hectares in size. Coffee is their main cash crop and grows alongside food crops of corn, grain and bananas under the shade of native Birbira, Wanza, and Acacia trees.

PRICING EXPLAINED

*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.

^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
