ABOUT
High in the hills of Cundinamarca, the municipality of Ubaque boasts a climate of rich biodiversity. The town is named for the red sap of a local bush called ‘ybaquye’, meaning ‘blood of wood’. The coffee comes from the UBACAFE Association, a group of 43 farmers who call this area home.
Ubaque is 50km east of Bogotá and home to the indigenous Muisca people. This is our third year buying from this group of farmers and for the very first time, we bought the entire 220-bag lot. With this beautiful Colombian now the backbone of our Haymaker blend, we’re excited to keep using it for many years to come.
In Colombia, there is a daily price of coffee that’s set against the international C-market (or ‘commodity’) price. Most smallholders take their coffee to a collection station to sell at this special rate, which during our visit was 870,000 pesos per carga, or ‘load’ (125 kg). The price we paid for our Ubaque was 1,200,000 pesos per carga of parchment coffee - that’s well above the minimum.
