After a long and fascinating search, we finally have our first natural process offering from Guatemala. Produced at Finca El Rincón by the Vides family, this coffee is a highlight of 2019 and absolutely not to be missed.
In 1958, Jorge Vides, a doctor and the patriarch of the family bought a piece of land surrounded by forests in La Libertad, Huehuetenango. It was here that he founded the family’s very first coffee farm, Finca La Bolsa, planted with Bourbon and Caturra varieties.
Back in 2002 and with little knowledge of just how good their coffee was, general manager, Maria Vides and her son Renardo Ovalle decided to submit their coffee to the prestigious Cup of Excellence competition. They did incredibly well, placing second.
This international vote of confidence kicked the Vides family into action. They now own multiple coffee farms, all of which produce the same, beautiful quality of coffee for which they are widely known. The El Rincón farm at which this coffee is grown is now in its third generation of passionate coffee producers.
With a staunch commitment to sustainability, the Vides family integrates environmentally friendly practices and supports local communities by building schools and sharing their rich agronomy knowledge. We’re constantly impressed by how much Maria and her family invest back into their community.
Located in northern Guatemala, the Huehuetenango coffee-growing region is situated in the highlands near Mexico’s border where the average temperature is a lovely 23 degrees Celsius. The warm, dry winds of Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain help protect coffee trees from frost. Average annual rainfall in the Huehuetenango region is about 1800mm and the humidity sits at around 75%. Coffee cherries are harvested from January through April.
FOB price: AUD/kg $11.00
