Ethiopia Werka Natural
Bright blackberry and cranberry paired with stunning jasmine florals. Ethiopia Werka Natural is a coffee you’ll remember.
ORIGIN
Grown at a height of ~2000 MASL, this beautiful natural lot contains coffee grown near the kebele (local village) of Werka, located in the Nensebo district of Ethiopia’s West Arsi Zone.
WASHING STATION
Employing around 200 workers who process up to 1.5 million kilograms of coffee cherry every year, Gara Kone washing station produces exceptional natural coffees.
During harvest, the freshly picked cherry is delivered daily by some 750–800 independent outgrowers to the kebele of Refisa where Gara Kone is located.
The majority of the families that contribute to this lot farm organically on tiny plots of land averaging less than two hectares in size. Coffee is their main cash crop and grows alongside food crops of corn, grain and bananas under the shade of native Birbira, Wanza and Acacia trees. The average elevation of the farms in this region is very high – around 1950–2150 MASL. This, combined with the region’s cool temperatures, provides ideal conditions for the slow ripening of coffee cherries, leading to denser beans and a sweeter, more complex cup profile.
The region surrounding Werka is known for its multitude of local flora and fauna, with Harenna being one of the country’s last remaining natural forests. The microclimate here is heavily influenced by the forest, with cooler and wetter conditions than those experienced across the majority of Ethiopia. The area receives a whopping 995mm of rainfall each year, which is ideal for coffee propagation without being too heavy to negatively impact growing.

PRICING EXPLAINED
*This is the FOB (Free On Board) price: the price paid to the exporter before shipping, and which does not include shipping costs, weight loss (around 17%), storage and other charges. Ultimately, the FOB price represents the $ figure that stays in the coffee's country of origin, benefiting its producer, community, and beyond.
^This is the 'raw' price paid directly to the producer, and paid in the local currency for parchment coffee. The coffee is then milled and sorted before being placed in bags, ready for shipping.
